Wagyu More Hype Worth Queing 1 Hour?

To be honest I did not intend to blog about Wagyu More Buffet Steamboat when we decided to dine there. However, as I share my experience on insta stories, many of friends and follower were asking me how does it goes and does it worth the money and not to mention the min 1 hour queue to get a table. So to answer all of their question I decided to type a blog post on my dining experience in Wagyu More.

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a sponsored post and this meal is paid with my own money.

After seeing numerous post on FB and instagram from bloggers and influencer on this newly open Wagyu More (WM), we decided to give it a try. The only reason we went was for the Wagyu Beef. If I’m not wrong this is the only Wagyu Beef buffet available in Klang Valley or may be Malaysia too. If there is other Wagyu Beef buffet available, please let me know in the comment below I’d love to try it out.

I tried calling in to book one of the weekend and they told us it was full…. Fine we went to other place for dinner… Didn’t really think about it until  post about Wagyu More is popping up again, the power of marketing they said and it does makes us want to make it no matter what this time. In addition, there’s promotion for Grand Opening month where we get Japanese Wagyu A5 for free for every 4 adult buffet purchased per table.

So this time Thomas was the one calling to book. First call, “sorry sir we do not take any reservation during working hour, please message us and we will reply after working hour”. Ok understandable as they are really busy during working hour. Second call, trying our luck again by informing that we are booking the Wagyu Beef Buffet for 4pax. Again the same reply… So fine… We message them. Then we got a reply that it’s full and they only accept walk – in.

My Friend Melissa is back in Malaysia and I know she loved Wagyu and another friend Catherine also like to try. So we just take the chance and try to walk in to see if we can get any table. When I reach the queue is crazy long and we are required to queue for 1 hour min.

Question: Was the HYPE at WAGYU MORE  worth Queing 1 Hour for it?

As I share the photo of the queue DM start coming in asking me how was it? Was the buffet good? and many were comparing this to Sukiya. Since I am a fan of Sukiya, I will compare Wagyu More against Sukiya and will also see it individually if it worth the queue and most importantly the money.

QUEUE

Now to be honest queue in famous Sukiya’s Branch in Pavilion or Paradigm will easily take up to 1 hour just like WM. So they are quite the same in term of queuing time. However, there is some Sukiya’s branch like My Town or Da Men will have shorter queue time. Also, reservation for Sukiya is possible where WM is almost impossible. Well, may be it’s just for now. I guess in few months time when the hype is not as crazy as now the reservation will be open again.

PRICE

WM is opened in Gardens not Midvalley hence the price tag is definitely higher. It’s just a few bucks more in WM but if you have large family dining then it sure make a huge difference.

In overall I feel the price is quite alright but I may not for Wagyu buffet again may be the normal ones or the Iberico porks ones.

Sukiya

Normal Buffet : RM 32.80 (L) | RM 39.80 (D)

Wagyu More

Normal Buffet: RM 36.80 (L) | RM 44.80 (D)

Spanish Iberico Pork: RM 98.80

Australian Wagyu Beef: RM 148.80

Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef: RM 388.80

MEAT VARIETY & QUALITY

Wagyu More as more premium meat choices and meat part choices too provided if you pay more you can always opt for the premium Marble Wagyu beef. In Sukiya, there’s only one meat part and premium meat choice only via Ala-Carte order. However, Sukiya has lamb meat slice which is one of our favourites. It’s like both have their own type of meat. If you want specific meat part like pork loin, pork neck, pork belly, beef brisket, beef chuck roll and many more go for Wagyu More.

If you want lamb and better meat quality (for normal meat category not Wagyu Beef) go for Sukiya for sure. We find the normal beef from Sukiya taste better . BUT we might be spoiled with Wagyu that night that causes us feeling Wagyu More’s normal beef wasn’t that good. I will update here again on my second trip to try out the normal buffet just for the sake seeing if Wagyu More has improved and I want to try their Japanese Curry Broth.

Beef Brisket

Now let’s talk about the premium meat quality.

The Spanish Iberico Pork is tender and rich in taste. It also has the buttery taste because of the even distribution of fats but not as butter as Wagyu Beef. For RM 98.80 I will go for this over the normal pork meat buffet.

The Australian Wagyu Beef, first plate was all good… The even fats marbling (medium marbling) and the meat tenderness cause every of us on the table going mmmmphhhh soo good. When come to the third one we were quite  disappointment. The Wagyu Beef is filled with fats on one side, we asked to change. Then the 4th one came still fats concentrated on the edge but slightly better than the third one. We accepted it but was feeling gaggy towards the end…. Also it’s really sad for Thomas because his tummy cannot tolerate the fat he had diarrhea the next day.

We got a plate of Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef Slice for free. First off we were quite sad to see only three slice for 4 of us to share… It would better if they gave us 4 slices and if it’s too pricey to do so they could have cut it in a smaller width so 4 of us don’t need divide it after we cook it. It wasn’t fun to do so and it makes the entire tasting experience drop a notch.  Aside from that we really love the A5 wagyu. The premium marbling is perfect, not too buttery and the rich taste and the tendernessss… Just WOW…. If you ask will I pay RM 388.80 for it, I will say NO. I will rather for a grilled full slab A5 Wagyu steak instead.

SOUP

WM is the winner here for varieties…  They have 6 type of soup to choose from.

  • Tomato Soup
  • Miso Soup
  • Kimchi Soup
  • Pork Bone Soup
  • Spicy Pork Bone Soup
  • Sukiyaki
  • Kombu Soup
  • Soy Sauce Soup
  • Japanese Curry Soup

We pick the spicy pork bone soup and sukiyaki. Their soup is lighter compared to those in Sukiya. The spicy pork bone is not really spicy even for non spicy fan like me. I prefer sukiyaki soup in Sukiya more it’s sweeter and more intense. However, I love to return to try out the Japanese curry soup next.

SUSHI

Both Sukiya & WM offers sushi on the side to fill your tummy while your ingredient is cooking. Forget about sushi in WM it tastes worst than those in AEON BIG (used to be Carrefour). Eventhough WM offers better topping for the sushi like bigger slice of salmon but the sushi rice really bland and taste so bad…. I almost wanna puke it out. Sukiya sushi is smaller in size which is good so I won’t be too full after eating it and their rice is so much better…. I suspect WM forgets the vinegar in their rice….

WM Sushi, huge slice of salmon and salmon belly

SEAFOOD

Sukiya has frozen scallop and some time clam (not so fresh, always filled with dirty sand) while WM has only oyster. I got to give it to the oyster, it’s fresh and not frozen and with just light swish on the broth and it’s ready.

THE VEGES & BALLS

This section, both Sukiya & WM come really close. The variety almost similar with Sukiya has slightly more vegetable choices. WM has the Squid Ink Balls which we like but does not have the bursting meat ball and burger patty like Sukiya did.

As a whole I think WM doing good in this area so for those who need veges and other balls to break the solid meat swish they got it.

WM also serve soba and spaghetti in small portion which is really good.

DESSERT & ICE CREAM

WM has cakes and pudding and taste quite alright…. Sad thing is they do not have match ice cream like Sukiya do but their peanut is very crunchy (most likely still new all is fresh)

SERVICE & ENVIRONMENT

I really think their staff require to go through some training to understand their own menu on what they are serving. The staff that serving us look so blur, we told her that we want the Australian Wagyu Beef Buffet and she repeatedly point us to order to normal buffet… We were all confused on what she trying to tell us…We point on the menu what we want and in the end she nod her head…. Few minutes later the manager came over to understand our order and explained to us that there’s few meat type we can choose…..

Their meat refill for wagyu beef is rather slow and there’s not like many table really…. The store itself is quite small and the walkway is pretty narrow.

My friend also informed me he has a bad experience too… There were a lot of table that are empty but the staff told him it was reserved and ask him to make reservation in future. They should have release the table if after 15 min the patron still not arrived….

OVERALL THOUGHTS

Now let’s talk about WM alone without comparing to Sukiya.

We honestly feel the Australian Wagyu Beef Buffet price is a little too expensive and the meat cut wasn’t as good as we expect…. The Japanese A5 Wagyu Beef quality was really good but for that price tag like I mentioned above I’ll choose to dine in restaurant for a full steak instead.

The normal steamboat buffet is not bad for the available soup selection and meat type varieties. The soup quality too we hope they make it slightly more intense for sukiyaki soup at least for me it should. We think meat quality can still be improved and staff can be better trained. Also hoping they will consider adding lamb in their meat choices.

If you want to checkout my review for Sukiya do checkout my previous post here.

I guess I will end this post here. See you in the next one.

p/s: Sorry for the lousy photo as I did not intend to blog about this at all…. We just wanna eat and enjoy our meal sometimes…..

Hmm agree with you, rather pay for wagyu value with that price by going for wagyu steak

truthfully, for hotpot, I rather order normal and not pay in addition to have expensive meats (most people don’t even know if these are real wagyu or etc as claimed). There are fake wagyu’s in the market as well (can youtube this).

to truly experience real fresh wagyu hot pot, I rather save up n eat in Japan

    • Cindy Tong

I agreee there so many fake wagyu and unless if you eat wagyu all the time you can’t differentiate which is real.

I feel its ok to have wagyu for hotpot but not everytime…prolly just try once la…the smoothness from the even distribution does beat the normal beef…

yeah eating in japan is a great idea but got to wait till have enough saving can be a pain especially for me hahaahha cos japan not on top of my list now…..
