Everything You Need for a Huge Shopping Trip in a New Country

Is there anything more exciting than a huge shopping trip in a new city? It’s a fantastic chance to take a look around, check out the architecture, find the best shops, immerse yourself in the fashions of another culture, find some great souvenirs to take home, eat in some amazing restaurants and find out more about a new country. But it can quite easily go horribly wrong. Without some planning, you can find yourself lost, unable to find the facilities you need, confused by local customs and worst of all, empty handed! Here’s a look at everything that you need for the perfect shopping trip in a new country.

A Map

There is something very appealing about going out into a new area without a map. Just exploring, taking your time and going your own way. But, this can lead to a completely wasted trip, and could even be dangerous if you find yourself in an unpleasant area.

Have a look online before you head out to find the best shopping areas. You’ll be able to spot the main districts on a map, but you should also do some research to see if there are any less obvious hidden gems you don’t want to miss. Then, print out or pick up a map you can take with you in case you need a little extra guidance.

It can also be a good idea to highlight any facilities you need so that you can find them easily.

This can include cash machines, health centres, taxi ranks and the local police station. If you are staying in a hotel close to a large landmark or attraction such as Protea Hotel Tambo Airport, it should be easy to get back to, but have a route back planned out in case of emergencies.

A Plan

Planning your whole day to the tiniest detail can make things boring. But, there is a middle ground. You should plan where you are going to start the day, when you want to stop for lunch and where you will be at that time. Leave room for spontaneity, but have a rough idea of where you want to be and when.

Comfortable Shoes

This one is an absolute must. The last thing you want on your big shopping excursion is sore, tired feet. Wear the most comfortable shoes you can find. You should also make sure you are sensibly dressed and prepared for any weather changes. A small, lightweight jacket and some flat sneakers can be a good idea.

This is an essential wherever you are, but especially in a hot climate. Take a bottle of water and a few easy to carry, refreshing snacks in case you need refreshments. It’s also a good idea to take emergency supplies such as plasters and any medication you need.

A Safe Bag

You can never be entirely sure how safe you are in a foreign location. While there’s no need to panic or be put off, it’s always a good idea to make sure you are wearing a bag that’s zipped up and hard to grab. A cross body can be perfect for both safety and comfort.
